For its participation in Maze Design Basel, the Galerie Gastou presents a vibrant dialogue between the great masters of the 1970s and a new generation of contemporary creators who are today pushing the boundaries of design and sculpture. Alongside iconic works by Philippe Hiquily, Jean-Claude Farhi, François-Xavier Lalanne and Raphaël Raffel, the gallery brings to light the sensitive and organic worlds of Agnès Debizet, Irene Cattaneo and Béatrice Serre. Works that, despite the decades separating them, seem to speak a common language: that of freedom of form, the poetic power of materials, and a certain idea of timeless elegance.
This confrontation of eras has been at the heart of the gallery’s vision since its very beginning. More than a simple presentation, the aim is to create connections, to let lines, tensions and aesthetic obsessions flow between past and present. To show that great creators never really age when they achieve a true and just form. In Basel, the brass of Hiquily, the otherworldly silhouettes of Lalanne and the radical volumes of Farhi find a natural echo in the dreamlike sculptures of Agnes Debizet, the quiet poetry of Irene Cattaneo and the mineral reliefs of Béatrice Serre. A journey through time in which design becomes a living, free and deeply contemporary territory.
